Students served by the school district include approximately 2,000 kindergartners through twelfth graders. These students attend one of four district schools.

Elementary students (grades K-5) attend either Eugene Ware School or Winfield Scott School. Both have an enrollment of about 450. Each school's academic program emphasizes reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science. The children also participate in physical education, vocal music, art, library, and computer labs. Computers in every classroom are networked with others throughout each building.

Students in grades 6-8 attend Fort Scott Middle School. This school, with an enrollment of about 500, features a home-base program which helps students make the transition from elementary school. Each student is assigned a teacher as an advisor and works with that same teacher throughout the three years of middle school.

A core curriculum of reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, and science is emphasized through a teaming approach. Physical education courses are required at each grade level. Life skills classes offered include: clothing, foods, technology, and lab applications. Students may choose among the following four fine arts electives: art, band, chorus, and orchestra. Project: GROW, a science-based course, is offered for students seeking an alternative to the fine arts.

FSMS is unique with an intramural program offering age-appropriate after-school opportunities for students. Students may participate in the following activities: football, volleyball, basketball, softball, gymnastics, wrestling, track, or tennis. A large percentage of the middle school student body selects intramural's as an extra-curricular offering. FSMS promotes each student to become a "winner."

In addition, mini-course programs are offered two days per week for 30 minutes. P.R.I.D.E. and Adopt-A-Highway are two programs involving students in community projects.

Fort Scott High School, with an enrollment of about 670, serves those students in grades 9-12. The school is accredited by the North Central Association. The curriculum features two programs: the Regents curriculum that is designed to prepare students to enter Kansas universities, and the Tech Prep curriculum that provides students with the basics of technical training. Technology and computer labs provide experience in today's high tech world. Students may choose from a variety of electives and enjoy a wide range of extracurricular activities and clubs. Athletics include basketball, football, tennis, golf, track, soccer, baseball, softball, cross-country, wrestling, and volleyball. Advanced Placement classes in English, economics, calculus, and physics are offered at Fort Scott High School. These courses are designed for all students with special abilities and interests.
